You ever just have one of those days were nothing goes right? So last weekend I'm registered for the Whiskey 50 which is my first race/mountain bike event in 18 months. So I wake up the morning of the race get dressed and no shoes; I won't enumerate the string of expletives that came from my mouth. I weigh my options with one hour to go before starting the race I try everyone I know in town asking if they know any other Sasquatch's with size 13 Mountain bike shoes I can borrow. I looked everywhere asked everyone, no dice. I sat there and took a video of the start to the event I was suppose to be starting.
So at this point im left with a couple of choices 1.Hang out in Prescott waiting for my brother and friends to finish their event. 2. Wait for a bike shop to open at 9am and purchase some cheap shoes then go do my 50 mile race. I take option number 2 and purchase these Nike ACG shoes on discount.
So the actual race started at 8:00 am, I started at 9:30 am. The first 13 miles consisted of passing the 25 mile riders on some some pretty fun and gnarly single track. It was kind of fun impressing the heck out of myself with risky decending teqniques trying to make up some time. As I start on the skull valley section of the ride im questioning my own sanity of even trying to complete the full 50 1.5 hours late. To my suprise I actually start catching other 50 milers and make it to the 25mile check point before it closes. Then comes the big climb approxamately 13 miles of steep to moderate grades with a fortunate tailwind. I do a decent time up the climb and then down a barn burner of a decent into Prescott. I cross the line at 6:18:48 which put me at 117 out of 139 in my age group, tecnically I did the course in 4:48:48 since I started at 9:30 but whatever I got to enjoy some sweet scenery and still got to do my ride. I also wanted to thank Eric Luebkert who got me on my stumpjumper and got my butt out there to do it.
So Karma can suck it. I still did the ride!
